Having check in with his registration card downstairs, Kieran proceeded to heft his luggage up to his new dorm room in the lift, his faithful if slightly shaggy mutt pinned close by his legs. She wasn't on a leash; for one reason that he didn't have a spare hand to hold the leash with, and for the second reason that he'd never had her on one since the day he found her. Her undivided loyalty to him was what kept her glued to him, rarely out of her sight. Dogs were meant to be free, he believed, not kept caged and tied up all their lives.
Oof! he grumbled as the lift jolted to a halt, causing him to stumble and drop one of the many bags he was carrying. Luckily it wasn't an instrument! Struggling to pick it up, he hooked the curled handle over the fourth and fifth fingers of his left hand and tugged upwards, carrying it awkwardly.
Though built sturdily with a few extra pounds, Kieran was often clumsy and now was no exception. Thank God! he muttered, seeing that his room was only two down from the lift. Hefting the bags up a little higher, he strugged to fit the key in the lock, scrabbling momentarily while Symphony, his dog, waited patiently, long tail wagging in excitement.
At last it fit in, and he pushed down the handle, leaning his weight against the door to open it. It did so suddenly and he fell into the room, dropping the same bag again. Damn! he cursed slightly. Kieran wasn't usually grumpy or bad tempered but it had been a long day and the last thing he wanted now was for things to start acting up.
Symphony trotted in behind him and proceeded to lope down the hallway into the room, exploring, nose to the ground snuffling.
Noticing that one bed was by the window, and the dorm was as of yet unoccupied, Kieran made for it, piling his luggage onto the bed and then leaning across, lifting the shuttered blind to peer out. The view overlooked the campus, and as he watched the 'kids' playing frisbee, chatting in groups and relaxing in the sun, he grinned, feeling a lightness come over him.
Hmm... he said, standing back and eyeing his bags. Lifting his shoulders in a shrug, he took the gig case with his clarinets in it and put it in the cupboard underneath the bed, for safety. Patting his jeans, he made sure he had his keys and wallet before he turned to go, whistling Symphony to him.
C'mon girl, let's hit the road, he called, ruffling her ears when she came to him at once.
Turning, he left the room again, taking the stairs down this time 'cause Symphony wasn't too fond of lifts.
It didn't look too bad so far...
